make install fails for openni-kinect

faryeeblue
Hello

I use Ubuntu 11.10 and I try to communicate to a Kinect sensor (the kinect is not connected).  I installed ROS from

http://www.ros.org/wiki/electric/Installation/Ubuntu

and I try to install openni-kinect from

http://www.ros.org/wiki/openni_kinect

The problem is that when I try make install (or sudo make install) I receive an error. I do not know how to fix it.

This is what I receive:

cd openni && make

cd build/openni/Platform/Linux/CreateRedist && bash RedistMaker && cd -

The openni driver is included in the ubuntu packages openni-dev and
ps-engine, you don't have to compile it yourself.

Cheers,

Jochen

I do not compile anything. I meant when I type

make install

this error happens. It is exactly what is stated to be done here

http://www.ros.org/wiki/openni_kinect

Also when I Launch the OpenNI driver another error happens:

Read again what is stated under 3.1!

Apart from that, http://answers.ros.org/ would be the right forum for
this question.

Sorry I am a little new in ROS and even linux. First of all what is 3.1?

Also it was all about kinect in ros so I thought it is a correct forum. Anyways if you believe I will finally receive a reply there, I will try yeah!

Just for the record, you don't have to do anything (no make or make
install) to get the Kinect running (when you are using the binary Ubuntu
installation), that's what section 3.1 in the wiki is saying.

Thanks for your reply! Maybe I did not explain correctly. I did not use make install for ros-electric-openni-kinect package, I did it as it is stated in 3.2 for drivers. And the above mentioned errors happened.

Re: [Ros-kinect] make install fails for openni-kinect

Daniel Göhring
Hi,

I guess you are talking about installing the Openni-Kinect driver, as
described here:
http://www.ros.org/wiki/openni_kinect

As Jochen stated already, if you just follow step 3.1 (sudo apt-get
install ros-electric-openni-kinect)
you don't have to perform a source based installation from point 3.2.

Still, http://answers.ros.org/ might be the right forum for this.
Daniel
