[Ros-kinect] Troubled launching openni_camera

George
Hi there,

I apologize for asking such a basic level question, but I am beginner and the documentation online didn't help me very much on this issue. I am trying to use the Kinect sensor on my Linux machine (Ubuntu 10.10), to collect 3D point clouds of objects and analyze them. I followed the directions on http://www.ros.org/wiki/ni  to install OpenNI with Diamondback ROS, and the installation didn't give me any particular problem.

However, when I try to launch openni_camera, following what I found on http://www.ros.org/wiki/openni_camera , I get an error message (see below). As a consequence (I guess), when I try to launch rviz, and visualize 3D point clouds, I get nothing (the laser on the Kinect doesn't even come on). Same thing for the RGB camera.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Please remember that I am beginner (almost for everything here: Linux, C++, ROS...), so please try to keep your answer as much simple as you can =P

Thanks in advance for your help,
George

George,

Let's start with something simple. Can you send us the output of the "lsusb" command?

We're trying to assess whether the unit is connected correctly to your machine. Also, does "roscd openni_camera" work
correctly? (change directory to the openni_camera package).

Cheers,
Radu.
